I set out to explore Liberty Village in Toronto, a neighborhood that has changed dramatically over the years. My project was created to document and tell the story of Liberty Village through a series of photographs.
I started by researching Liberty Village's history, going back to its notorious past in the 1870s when its institutions were known for harsh conditions. Over time, the neighborhood transformed into a bustling industrial hub, thanks to its proximity to railway tracks. However, as transportation shifted from rail to road in the late 20th century, many factories closed, leaving Liberty Village as an industrial wasteland.
In 2001, the area experienced a revival, becoming a vibrant spot popular with young professionals. This rebirth brought new condominiums, lofts, offices, green spaces, shops, and eateries. Through my photography, I aimed to capture the unique and dynamic aspects of Liberty Village that make it special.
However, the ongoing changes in Liberty Village presented challenges. Continuous construction made some areas inaccessible, complicating my efforts to photograph certain locations.
Overall, this project has been an interesting journey of exploration and discovery. I hope these photographs provide a glimpse into Liberty Village's rich history and its ongoing transformation.
