In Nigeria, youth voices are often silenced due to cultural, social, and political barriers. Young people are frequently dismissed as inexperienced and incapable of making significant decisions, a belief rooted in longstanding traditions that prioritize the perspectives of older generations.
The Nigerian government has been criticized for suppressing youth voices through censorship and limiting political dissent. State control over media plays a key role in restricting freedom of expression, making it difficult for young people to speak out on issues that matter to them. This environment of fear leads to self-censorship, hindering meaningful youth participation in political discussions and the fight for their rights.
This project explores the journey of Nigerian youth through the past, present, and a hopeful future. The first image represents the past, depicting a silenced figure trapped in a cycle of oppression. It reminds us of the struggles we've faced, which are crucial for understanding our present and shaping our future.
The second image continues this narrative, reflecting the current state of Nigerian youth. It shows our efforts to break free from oppression, standing strong despite systemic challenges. We are taking control of our future, fighting passionately for our rights.
The final image envisions a future where Nigerian youth can thrive, free to be themselves and drive positive change in society. It portrays a time when our potential is fully realized, and we actively shape the nation's future.
The silencing of youth in Nigeria is a complex issue with many contributing factors. Recognizing the systemic challenges we face is crucial to building a more inclusive and fair society where young voices are heard and play a vital role in the country's development.
The second image in this series was featured in the DesignTO 2024 exhibition titled “touchbase.”
